Downton Abbey Style Inspiration

Downton Abbey. Full of drama, beautiful landscapes, fancy houses, British accents (!), and most of all, exquisite clothes. I love the clothes worn by the upstairs folk in Downton Abbey. Unfortunately, however, it's not always practical for us modern day girls to wear those floor-length, fancy dresses. Plus, where do you find these? That's why I came up with five ways you can incorporate the beautiful clothes of Downton Abbey into your own wardrobe, without looking like a you came from an Edwardian era reenactment. Even if you've never even seen the show, these simple suggestions with help you put a little 1910s/20s style into your wardrobe:

1. Lace
You can wear a lace shirt, dress, skirt, or even a lace headband. I would recommend pairing lace with something less sweet and more "edgy" for a more interesting, rounded look.

2. Pastels
Pastels and neutrals are common colours for dresses on Downton Abbey. Or you could go with black. They always seen to be mourning someone's loss at Downton... But anyway. Pastels can be easily incorporated. Depending on the look you're going for, you may want to mix the pastels with a darker or somewhat brighter colour, or with another complementary pastel. Both add variety.

3. Hats
As you can see in the picture, straw hats go nicely with the Downton style. It might be necessary, however, to customize your hat a bit to make it work. You can dress the hats up or down to fit your personal style.

4. Shoes
Shoes usually have a heel, but are not too tall (I would estimate about two to three inches). You could wear these shoes with jeans, for a casual chic look, or with a dress or skirt, for a fancier look.

5. Hair
The hair styles may be a bit difficult to emulate, but barrettes and headbands like those worn on Downton Abbey are readily accessible, and easy enough to diy.

The Cat's Sacred Duty

                                                    The Cat's Sacred Duty
Cats Sacred Duty Meme | Slapcaption.com As we all know our cats can be loving and annoying. They see that we are very busy with something and wish to help out. So they jump up to where you are and sit right on top or right in front of your work. They obviously don't find it irritating. But we do. You stare at the blob of fur that is interrupting your work and you see how happy this creature looks. How can you stay mad at that?
You should stay mad, for awhile anyways. For these creatures like to stalk you when you sleep or down a dark hall way. Even as we speak there is a cat interrupting my work. The cat pictured above is my cat stalking me in my closet. These cats may act endearing but they are very, very, evil. So beware the next time your cat interrupts your work, for he/she may be plotting something greater in mind.

I do not own the meme. I only own the image of the black cat.

Divergent Lookbook

The other day, some friends and I went to go see DIVERGENT. I've read the books and seen the movie, and I LOVE how the directors and producers translated to book to the movie. In case you are unfamiliar with the series, allow me to explain some things.

It's set in future Chicago, and the inhabitants of the city are the only (sane) people left in the world. Society is separated in to five factions, each based on a value, skill, or moral. There is Dauntless (the brave) Abnegation (the selfless) Erudite (the intelligent) Amity (the caring) and Candor (the honest). Each of these factions have a dress code, so that they can distinguish each other.

So, in the spirit of geekiness, I have created a lookbook based on three of the factions. Enjoy!

Sherlock Style Steal

Welcome Brethren! Tis time for the geekiness to begin! My name is Keely W. and my job on this quaint little blog is to cover all things nerdy, including but not limited to:
Sherlock
Doctor Who
Geek Chic
Lord of the Rings
ENGLAND
and wait for it..........
BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH!

Yep, cuz if you don't like Benedict Cumberbatch, then we can't be friends. And that's just no fun. :( Now, let's get down to business and start of with my very first post!

SHERLOCK BBC INSPIRED OUTFIT
This look is inspired by the BBC version of Sherlock, the third season of which recently came out in the U.S. In particular, this is centered on the scene from the Great Game, (season 1, ep. 3) where Sherlock repeatedly shoots his wall simply because he is bored.

LEGGINGS LIKE THESE.

NOTE: I don't have this skirt to measure, but before buying, I would use the "fingertip rule". If it's shorter than your finger when your arms are relaxed at the side, then don't buy it, unless you plan on wearing it over shorts or with leggings. LEGGINGS LADIES, NOT TIGHTS. Also, the t-shirt picture hear might or might not have a cutout back, in which case I recomend a tank top underneath to preserve modesty.

Le Petit Prince

I speak French, so I was very much excited, when, in my fourth year of French class, we finally got to read a "real" book in French. That book was Le Petit Prince par Antoine de Saint Exupéry. (This is also available in English translation as: The Little Prince)
Before I started, I didn't realize how charming the book would be, or how much it would ring true. The book is about the narrator's first drawings - a snake that looks like a hat, and a second one showing the elephant inside the snake - and how the drawings were scoffed at by les grands personnes. The narrator then stops drawing and becomes a pilot, eventually crashing his plane in the Sahara. It is here where he is visited by the little prince, who lives on a little planet and loves sunsets - but most of all, his flower.
The prince lives on Asteroid B-612 with three volcanoes (two active and one extinct. But as the little prince says, "One never knows!")
The story follows the little prince's trip from his planet to Earth, on the way encountering other planets. On Earth, he tames a fox, who teaches the little prince about friendship.
The book, being French, does not have the happiest of endings. However, the rest of the book makes up for this. And if you can read it in French, it will be so much richer.

How to keep you and your fingernails happy

How to keep you and your fingernails happy

You look at your dull and boring fingernails and you think, "What could make me and my fingernails happier?" Read on to find out. Many times people overlook their fingernails and don't take care of them. They think "Oh, I'll just do them later." Later on comes and they're still not done. By the time you notice that you forgot your nails... it's too late. Your at school or at work or even at a party where you need your nails to be done. Even if you don't need your nails done to complete your outfit, having a fresh coat of paint makes you feel good.
Here's what I recommend, wear a coat of nail polish that is bright or sparkly. Like this picture:
Wearing a bright colored or sparkly nailpolish will help you and your nails feel happier.

How To Prepare for the Kitty Apocolypse

Fear not! Cats are your friends!
Why hello! If you haven't noticed, all three of us girls here love cats. While some concern themselves with how most cats are secretly plotting their owner's demise, too many people ignore this problem, leaving nothing to discourage our cat's from killing us all in our sleep. Let's be honest; cats are clever, certainly clever enough to organize some sort of kitty Apocalypse. And they have motive as well. Thousands of cats live out on the streets, yearning for a better way of life, and a rebellion against humans would provide them with homes to sleep in. Also, the trash left over from the humans' regime would encourage the rodent population to "live long and prosper", providing a more than adequate food supply for the now dominate felines.
Yup.

But before you get to discouraged, allow me to inform you that there are in fact ways to arm yourself against the upcoming cat rebellion!  In fact, if we all follow these simple steps, it may yet be possible to squelch the uprising before it has even begun.

Playing with your cat is essential to your survival.
Step One- Get a cat. This may surprise you, since they are considered by many to be the enemy. But by owning a cat, (and treating it well) you convert one of the rebels to humanities' side, and when the apocalypse begins, you will have a protector.

Step Two-  Play with said cat. Step one will only work if the afore mentioned feline is content.

Step Three- Be aware of the threat- Don't let your cat spend too much time with "undesirables": cats who are sympathetic to the feline cause.

Step Four- Hone your cat's combat skills- When the time comes, your cat must be ready to defend you, as well as humanity. To prep your cat for battle, allow it to play outside (on a leash, and don't forget to enforce Step Three) and become aware of it's surroundings. Putt the Lion King on a loop, in order to remind it of it's primeval instincts. It may also be usefull to invest in combative armour (eBay has some nice selections)

Step Five- Be Ready- When war inevitably breaks out, you and your neighbors should follow a prepared combat plan and proceed calmly to your war base, allowing the batle to rage with minimum casualties.
